In Spain Easter is lived very intensely, so many celebrations begin from Thursday, and on that day all the offices close. On 2009 celebrations will start on the 5th of April and will end on the 12th.The celebrations for the "Semana Santa" (Holy week) in Salamanca are of the most impressive of the entire peninsula with massive processions that start from the Gothic cathedral. During the processions members of different Easter brotherhoods, dressed in typical clothes, walk the streets carrying religious images following the rhythm of drums and music. The Monday after Easter, called "Lunes de Aguas," is really a typical of Salamanca. In medieval times this day marked the return of prostitutes to the city after having been temporarily exiled during Lent. Today the Salmantinos remember this celebration sitting by the river and eating "hornazo," a meat pie.
